Railway Project in Bihar: Ahead of Bihar Assembly elections scheduled later this year, Indian Railways (IR) has decided to begin construction of a new rail line between Sultanganj and Katoria. The move aims to further strengthen rail connectivity in the state. This infrastructure project falls under the administrative control of East Central Railway (ECR) zone.
Sultanganj to Katoria Railway Line
The 74.8-km-long Sultanganj to Katoria railway line project will pass through Asarganj, Tarapur, and Belhar. Besides Sultanganj and Katoria, the proposed railway line will have five more stations. These are: Asarganj, Tarapur, Belhar, Srinagar, and Suayabathan. Katoria will be developed as a junction station. At present, it lies on the Banka–Jasidih railway line.

Construction of Sultanganj to Katoria Railway Line
According to Railways, the Sultanganj–Katoria railway line project is estimated to cost around Rs 1,261 crore. At present, the distance from Sultanganj to Deoghar via Bhagalpur, Banka, and Katoria is approximately 131 km. With the new line, this distance will be reduced to about 101 km, significantly improving connectivity between Sultanganj and Deoghar.
Significance of Sultanganj to Katoria Railway Line in Bihar
The Sultanganj to Katoria railway line will facilitate train travel for Shiva devotees from across the country, especially those from Bhagalpur and Deoghar. Upon completion of the project, millions of pilgrims carrying holy water to Deoghar will be able to travel easily every year.
Doubling of Bakhtiyarpur–Rajgir–Tilaiya Railway Project
Recently, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the doubling of Bakhtiyarpur – Rajgir – Tilaiya single railway line section. The 104-km-long stretch will be doubled with a total cost of Rs 2,192 crore (approximately). The enhanced line capacity will improve mobility, providing enhanced efficiency and service reliability for train operations.
