Months have passed since April 27, when the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB) conducted the WBJEE. As aspirants eagerly await the WBJEE result date and the start of their academic session, the Board has asked candidates belonging to SC, ST and OBC communities to upload caste certificates on the official website, wbjeeb.nic.in. The announcement by WBJEEB comes after the Calcutta High Court directed the state to publish a fresh merit list for WBJEE 2025. Registered candidates have time till August 21 to re-upload their caste certificates on the official website’s dashboard.
“SC/ST/OBC candidates are requested to mention their respective caste/ tribe/ community names, and upload their respective certificates through the window available on WBJEEB’s websites from 18.08.2025 to 21.08.2025 (11:59 PM),” stated the notification from the WBJEEB.
This is not the first time when the Board has asked candidates to upload their caste certificates. Earlier, WBJEEB Chairperson Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee had asked only the OBC students to upload the documents by August 7.
As students hoped that the WBJEE results could be expected anytime after August 7, a new issue arose concerning contempt proceedings directed the board to publish a fresh merit list by giving 7 per cent reservation for the 66 classes of OBC under the old policy.
As the issue remains unresolved, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Monday threatened to launch statewide street protests from next week if the issue remains in limbo.
The reservation issue has not only impacted WBJEE but has also halted the WB NEET UG medical and dental counselling admission process 2025. A notification dated August 18 by the Directorate of Medical Education states that they have put the medical and dental admission process in ‘abeyance till further orders’. The notification does not mention the reason behind the decision.
The decision comes after the West Bengal Medical Counselling Committee (WBMCC) updated the provisional state merit list for the WB NEET UG counselling 2025, specifically for the 85 per cent state quota seats. A total of 11,178 candidates were deemed eligible to participate in the first round of choice filling for admission to MBBS and BDS courses in government and private medical colleges across West Bengal.
At the same time, the results for PUBDET 2025, conducted for admission to Presidency University undergraduate courses, are also not released. The entrance exam was conducted between June 21 and June 22. The merit list for WBCAP and JEXPO is also awaited, with delays in the application form for these exams: JENPAS UG, JELET, JECA, PUMDET, ANM GNM, JEMAS 2025.
With delays in the results announcement and now counselling, students are worried about their academic session and options once the results are announced. Candidates are sharing their concerns on the microblogging site X.
While students like Abhinav have put money to hold seats in NIT, others ask if five months delay is not enough?
The Board conducts entrance examinations for admission to the undergraduate as well as postgraduate professional and vocational courses in various higher education institutions in the State of West Bengal.
