THE Rankings 2024: In a first, there are a record-breaking number of Indian universities in Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings 2024. The top university in India, the Indian Institute of Science, has returned to the global top 250, coming in the 201-250 band, for the first time since 2017, in the largest edition of Times Higher Education’s (THE) World University Rankings.
The second highest ranked universities in India are Anna University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Mahatma Gandhi University, Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences, which are all in the 501-600 band.
Indian universities made significant gains this year, including five of the countries’ top universities. IISc moved up from 251-300 band last year to 201-250, Anna University moved up from 801-1000 band last year to 501-600, Aligarh Muslim University moved up from 801-1000 band last year to 601-80, and Bharathiar University moved up from 801-1000 band last year to 601-800. Also, Malaviya National Institute of Technology entered the ranking for the first time in the 601-800 band.
Two IITs, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati and Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad, moved up two bands to join the world’s top 800 universities, from 1001-1200 to 601-800.
This year, 91 Indian institutions are included in the list. In the 20th year of the ranking 1,904 universities – up from 1,799 last year – from 108 countries and regions are ranked.
THE Rankings 2024 are the most comprehensive, rigorous and balanced global ranking assessing research-intensive universities across 18 performance indicators covering their core missions of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and internationalisation.
“India has well and truly embraced the international agenda, and international competition, with an unprecedented 91 universities making it into the rigorous and demanding Times Higher Education World University Rankings this year – making India now the fourth best represented nation in the rankings.
“This is great news for India, as these institutions can deploy THE’s rich, international performance benchmarks to further improve and to put themselves rightfully on the world stage. Although methodological changes this year have not been kind to some Indian institutions, the overall picture remains positive – with a rise into the top 250 for IISc and several other rising institutions,” said Phil Baty, THE’s Chief global affairs officer.
As per the THE Rankings 2024, the UK’s University of Oxford is the highest ranked university in the world with Stanford University taking second place, making it the US’s top ranked university, and in third place is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
In the top 10 of THE Rankings 2024, seven universities are from the US, while the other three are from the UK.
This time, Asia is the most represented continent with 737 universities participating and is the continent that is improving more than the others in teaching and research quality. One-hundred and sixty-five universities are ranked for the first time, 89 of which are from Asia with one newly ranked university from mainland China. Mainland China has the best ranked universities, overall, in Asia. This year an unprecedented 33 Asian universities are in the top 200, up from 28 last year. The biggest drivers for this jump are China (from 11 to 13) and Japan (from 2 to 5).
