Candidates from India and China are among the biggest English test-takers in the world, according to Duolingo English Test. City-wise Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru in India and at the global level, Beijing, Dhaka and Shanghai have over 4000 registrations. Besides, these “high-volume” cities, those with 500 test takers or more, represent 56 per cent of all Duolingo English Test (DET) takers worldwide.
India is the primary market for the DET as they have seen over 20 per cent growth in the last year.
Over 50 per cent of Indian applicants still prefer English-speaking countries as their first choice for studying abroad. In India, DET’s top 10 largest cities account for 76 per cent of overall test volume. “We have seen particularly strong adoption in Hyderabad (and surrounding areas), where the demand for studying in the US is most pronounced,” said a spokesperson from DET.
For India specifically, the surge in the middle-income class has fueled the popularity of studying abroad. The Indian overseas education market is projected to hit $100 billion by 2025, as more than 2 million Indian students intend to pursue higher education overseas.
The DET has also seen significant growth in countries like Pakistan, China, the US and Brazil.
In the last five years, several countries have witnessed a significant increase in Indian student registrations. The top five preferred destinations for Indian students are the United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Australia, and Germany. These countries have experienced substantial growth in student registrations due to various factors such as world-class education, diverse course offerings, and favourable immigration policies.
