The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in NCR and adjoining areas has directed all educational institutions, including schools and colleges, in Delhi and its surrounding areas to adopt a hybrid mode of teaching as air pollution continues to worsen. This decision comes as Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) hit 392 on Tuesday morning, dangerously close to the “severe” category, reflecting a rapid decline from Monday’s AQI of 300.

The option to exercise online mode of education, wherever the mode is feasible, will vest with the students and parents, said the Commission in its order.

It mandates state governments in Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddh Nagar to implement hybrid learning immediately. Other NCR regions have been urged to consider similar measures to safeguard students’ health.

A significant drop in wind speed has been cited as a key factor behind the deteriorating air quality, accompanied by stagnant atmospheric conditions. Alongside the smog, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 11.9°C, a degree above normal, adding to the discomfort for residents.

State governments are now tasked with ensuring the smooth functioning of hybrid classes, especially in schools where infrastructure or access to online learning tools may pose challenges.

Educational institutions are expected to adapt swiftly to this directive, balancing the needs of students who rely on physical classrooms with the precautionary measures necessary to combat the hazardous air quality.
