Owing to heavy rain predictions, schools have been asked to stay closed in several districts across Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra.

Schools are shut in five talukas of Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka after the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for coastal Karnataka on Saturday.

Keeping this in mind, District Collector of Chikkamagaluru, Meena Nagaraj said “holiday in schools announced by district authority in 5 talukas of Chikkamagaluru district (NR Pura, Mudigere, Sringeri, Chikmagalur, Koppa) in view of heavy rain in the region.”

Schools are also shut in parts of the neighboring states — Kerala and Maharashtra — due to heavy rains. In Kerala, all educational institutions in Kannur, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts have been closed for today. IMD issued an orange alert for Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kasarkode and a yellow alert for Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Palakkad, Thrissur and Malappuram. However, there is no change in the PSC exams of Kannur University.

All schools are closed for today (July 24) in Maharashtra’s Raigad district. District Collector of Raigad, Yogesh Mhase said, “All schools to remain closed in the Raigad district today in view of the heavy rains in the region.” An orange alert has been issued for Raigad. Around 27 people died in the district due to a landslide on July 19.

Meanwhile, schools were closed in Uttarkashi as well after several houses, vehicles and roads were damaged due to a cloudburst incident on July 22. Earlier this month, schools were closed across several north Indian states due to incessant rains and flood-like situation.
