The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings for Architecture and Planning over the past five years between 2021 and 2025 have once again highlighted the dominance of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee. IIT Roorkee has consistently secured the top position.

Initially, the category was listed as “Architecture”, but in 2024 it was redefined as “Architecture and Planning”, broadening its scope. This change enabled planning-oriented institutions to gain visibility alongside traditional architecture schools. Notably, IIEST Shibpur has featured in the top five for two consecutive years, underscoring the impact of this shift.
Since 2021, IIT Roorkee has held the top rank, improving its score from 82.65 in 2021 to 84.92 in 2024 before slightly dipping in 2025. NIT Calicut and IIT Kharagpur have consistently battled for second and third places, showcasing strong academic and research output. The School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, which was ranked fourth in 2021, slipped to the eighth in 2025 despite remaining a prominent name in the field.
Institutes including Jamia Millia Islamia, CEPT University Ahmedabad, and NIT Rourkela have steadily risen in the charts, reflecting growing competitiveness. Interestingly, newer entrants like Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) Nagpur and Aligarh Muslim University found space in the top 10 in 2024 and 2025, diversifying the list beyond traditional strongholds.
Overall, the five-year rankings indicate a steady consolidation of IITs and NITs at the top, while central universities and specialised planning schools continue to compete for mid-tier positions.
