The journey from a small village to getting awarded the Nobel Prize and Bharat Ratan, CV Raman’s contribution to the field of science is remembered even today. From research over the scattering of light to X-rays and colours of the sea, Raman made the dream of India to be a leader in science and tech, one inch closer. It is to commemorate his works in the field of science, the government celebrates National Science Day on February 28.
But why February 28? Why not his birthday, November 7, celebrated as National Science Day? It is because on February 28, 1928, Chandrasekhara Venkata (CV) Raman announced the discovery of the Raman Effect and for it, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930.
In 1986, the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) requested the Center to designate February 28 as National Science Day. The day was first celebrated on February 28, 1987.
This year, the theme of the National Science Day is ‘Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science and Innovation for Viksit Bharat’. The government will celebrate the day at the Plenary Hall in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
The day is celebrated to encourage youth to understand the aspects of science and develop an interest in it. The goal is to explain the importance of science among people.
