International Women’s Day is observed on March 8 every year to mark and celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and raise awareness about women’s equality and accelerate gender parity. International Women’s Day was first observed in 1911.
Government departments and private organisations offer scholarship and fellowship opportunities to the woman students in the country. Here is a list of government scholarships and fellowships for women and girl students:
The Department of Science and Technology awards the Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) scheme Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE). Under this, scholarships are offered to students in undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) studies. Candidates can apply at online-inspire.gov.in.

Under the AICTE Pragati Scholarship for Girls, female students studying in the first year of a technical diploma or degree course at an AICTE-recognised institution will receive financial aid to continue their education. The application for the AICTE Pragati Scholarship for Girls usually opens in September and closes in October.

This is meant to support postgraduate students who are the only girl child of their parents. Applicants taking admission in the first year of full-time master’s degree programme can avail this scholarship. This scholarship is offered by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Application for this scholarship usually opens in January.

Under the Single Girl Child scholarship scheme, students will get Rs 500 per month. The monthly tuition fee must not exceed Rs 1,500 per month in Class 10 and 10 per cent enhancement in Class 11 and Class 12. To be eligible for this, candidates should be the only child in the family. They should have cleared Class 10 with 60 per cent from a CBSE-affiliated school, and should also be currently in Class 11 from the same school. The application is underway and will continue till October.

The Department of Science and Technology offers this scholarship to encourage women scientists and technologists who are taking a break in their careers. Application generally begins in February and women scientists/technologists between 27 and 57 years of age can apply.
Step 1: Register at the website — online-wosa.gov.in/wosb using the active email ID.
Step 2: After logging in to the WOS-B portal with the login credentials, fill and submit the full Project Proposal under WOS-B. Project Proposal Document (PPD) will include online submission and uploading of required documents in the specified formats.
Step 3: Preview and click on the ‘final submit’ button
Candidates will also have to send one hard copy of the submitted proposal to the Department of Science and Technology (DST) New Delhi superscribing the envelope with ‘Women Scientist Scheme-B (WOS-B).
To give consolation and support to girl child to study technical education, this scholarship has been propelled by the Education Ministry and executed by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The application tentatively begins in December-January.

This fellowship is initiated by the UGC and can be availed by those woman candidates, who are unemployed PhD degree holders and want to carry out advanced studies and research. The total duration of the fellowship is five years with no provision for further extension. The number of slots available under the scheme is 100 per year.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham will provide scholarships to female students enrolling on any of the online programmes at Amrita AHEAD. Women learners enrolling on any of the online programs at Amrita AHEAD, its online programs division, would be offered a 20 per cent scholarship on their first semester fees.
Progress, a provider of infrastructure software, is also inviting applications from women applicants for the 2024 Progress Software Akanksha Scholarship for Women in STEM in India. The Akanksha Scholarship will offer a renewable four-year scholarship of up to Rs 1,50,000 per year, intended for tuition, fees and other educational costs. It is available to women who are residing in India and are enrolled in the first year of an undergraduate program in the fields of Computer Science Engineering (CSE), Computer Science Information Technology (CSIT) or related
courses. The last date to register for the scholarship is April 12, 2024. Woman candidates can apply at the official website — progress.com/social-responsibility/women-in-stem-scholarships.
Meanwhile, DXC Technology (NYSE: DXC) on March 7 awarded 310 female scholars with the DXC Progressing Minds Scholarship Program for the academic year 2023–24. Among the recipients, 260 have been granted scholarships for STEM education, while 50 have been acknowledged in the sports category. Each recipient in the STEM category is entitled to receive a one-time financial award of Rs 50,000, whereas female athletes will be granted a one-time aid of Rs 1,25,000.
The Hero Vired, a learntech start-up by the Hero Group, also has launched its special scholarship initiative – #EmpowerHer to provide special benefits to women learners. Throughout March, Hero Vired will be offering a 25 per cent scholarship to women learners across all programme batches starting in March and April 2024. The scholarship will be applicable across all courses and programmes offered by Hero Vired, ranging from its product management and data analytics programmes to extended reality (AR +VR) and its gaming and e-sports programmes.
Also, JK Lakshmipat University (JKLU) has launched a campaign to address the alarming rate at which female students drop out of schools and colleges across India. Titled #MentorinHerDreams and #BringHerBackToSchool, the campaign aims to inspire, empower, and mentor girls to persist in completing their higher education journeys at the JK Lakshmipat University in Jaipur. As part of the campaign, the university and will provide scholarships to girl students. Candidates can apply for the JKLU scholarship by March 31 at applications.jklu.edu.in.
