This is a continuing scheme and since its launch in 2008-09, 22.06 lakh scholarships have been sanctioned till 2020-21 involving an expenditure of Rs 1,783.03 crore.

The parental/family income ceiling is Rs 8 lakh per annum for all categories under the scheme and would be applicable from the academic session 2018-19. An income certificate would be required for fresh applicants only.

The annual budget of 2021-22 will benefit 6,561 post-matric students compared to 4,622 the previous year, 12,868 students in classes 9 and 10 compared to 2,506 in 2020-21, and 2,15,864 students in class 1 to 8 compared to 1,73,100 students the year before.

Candidates who wish to apply for any types of scholarship schemes from class 1 to 12 will have to apply online through the new portal.

The fellowship is payable for a maximum period of five years. Fellowship with Rs 31,000 per month will be given for two years as JRF fellows and for the remaining tenure, the fellowship amount will be Rs 35,000 per month.

Starting from 2021-22, the Central share (60 per cent) in the scheme would be released on DBT mode directly into the bank accounts of the students as per fixed time schedule, after ensuring that the concerned state government has released their share, the official statement claims.
