Free Basic Mess Scholarship
SC/ST students with annual parental income below Rs 4.5 lakh are eligible for the Free Basic Mess Scholarship, which exempts them from paying the basic mess bill and provides a pocket allowance to support daily living expenses.
External Scholarships
The institute also facilitates applications for scholarships offered by central and state governments, public sector undertakings, and other organisations. Students must apply independently, while IIT Kanpur assists with institutional formalities. The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) is one such platform for external opportunities.
Sports Scholarships
Each year, 20 sports scholarships worth Rs 1,000 per month for nine months are awarded to students excelling in campus sports or achieving recognition at Inter-IIT and external competitions.
Academic Excellence Awards
Students achieving a CPI of 8.5 or above in the previous academic year are considered for Academic Excellence Awards, which recognise outstanding academic performance.
Most scholarships are coordinated by the Students’ Scholarship and Prizes Committee (SSPC). For schemes like the Merit-cum-Means Scholarship, submission of a parental income certificate automatically makes students eligible for other applicable scholarships, including donor-funded ones. While institute scholarships are managed internally, students applying for external scholarships must complete the required procedures independently and seek institutional verification when necessary.
