Delhi Confidential: Leading From Front

Members jostling with each other to find the right spot that is visible on Sansad TV is a common scene in Lok Sabha. But on Thursday, with PM Narendra Modi scheduled to reply to the no-confidence motion, MPs, and even ministers, seemed to be making extra efforts.

Members jostling with each other to find the right spot that is visible on Sansad TV is a common scene in Lok Sabha. But on Thursday, with PM Narendra Modi scheduled to reply to the no-confidence motion, MPs, and even ministers, seemed to be making extra efforts. First, there was a rush for the second row — right behind the PM’s seat. As members of the Treasury benches were not sure what the Opposition’s strategy would be during Modi’s speech, they seemed to have made an alternative arrangement — they kept three-four seats in the third row from the back empty. Two senior ministers were asked to be seated right behind the seat kept for the PM. But two MPs were seen pushing each other for 20-25 minutes to take the seat near the one kept for the PM. One of them came late but tried to squeeze in ignoring the vehement protest from the other one. After 20 minutes, the second one conceded and went to another row.

Older Version

On the fifth day of hearing in the Supreme Court in the Constitutional case against abrogation of Article 370, there was a small hitch. Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, who heads the five-judge bench, asked for an older copy of the Constitution. The version that the bench used had Article 370, which has been modified since 2019, the CJI said. The court is hearing the case four years after the special status to Jammu and Kashmir was diluted. Counsel Zafar Shah said he will share a copy from 1950 with the provisions in its original form.

Handloom Fan

Union MoS for Textiles Darshana Vikram Jardosh seems seriously committed in promoting handloom workers. She was catching hold of MPs and ministers in Parliament House to persuade them to visit the ‘My Handloom My Pride Expo’ at Handloom Haat. After writing to all women MPs, she has asked male MPs to make their wives visit the event. On Wednesday, she met ministerial colleague Meenakshi Lekhi in the corridors and complained that Lekhi hasn’t made it yet to the expo and showed her pictures of the articles handloom workers from different parts of the country have brought. Lekhi was so impressed that she called her office and suggested that they visit the venue.
