On Sunday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge sat with AICC organisation general secretary K C Venugopal, party’s Karnataka in-charge Randeep Surjewala, screening committee chairman Mohan Prakash and some other senior leaders to decide the party’s candidates for some 25 seats on which there are differences between Karnataka party chief D K Shivakumar and former chief minister Siddaramaiah. On the discussion table was also the desire expressed by Siddaramaiah to contest from Kolar.
Sources said most of the senior leaders were not in favour of him contesting from both Kolar and Varuna. The party has already announced his candidature from Varuna.
At a time when all eyes are on the upcoming Karnataka Assembly polls likely to witness a fierce contest between the BJP and the Congress, regional parties in Uttar Pradesh have started strengthening their positions for the civic body polls. On Sunday, the UP state election commission announced that the civic polls will be held in two phases on May 4 and 11, while counting will be on May 13. The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), which is likely to contest the polls in an alliance with the SP, has appointed a three-member committee for the selection of candidates.
