Lightning kills 9-year-old Surat boy playing in the rain, cousin sustains burn injuries

The boy along with two of his cousins were enjoying the rain after returning from school.

A nine-year-old boy, who was out playing in the rain on the terrace of his apartment in Surat along with two of his cousins Tuesday, died of lightning, while another child sustained burn injuries. The trio were enjoying the rain after returning from school, the police said.

The deceased has been identified as Pukhraj Suthar of Nakshatra residential society in Jolva village. The condition of his cousin Jashoda Suthar who suffered burns is stable, officials said.

According to the police, as soon as the lightning struck the two children, seven-year-old Pari Suthar who also playing with them came down immediately and intimated the incident to her parents.

On reaching the terrace, Pukhraj’s father Nemichand Suthar, and Jashoda’s father Sohanlal Suthar were shocked to see their children burnt and rushed them to Sanjeevani Hospital at Palsana.

“Lightning struck them while playing in the rain on the terrace of their house. Pukhraj died due to severe burn injuries late in the night while Jashoda is out of danger. She is undergoing treatment in the hospital,” assistant sub-inspector Mukesh Veljibhai said.

Palsana police reached the hospital, spoke to the parents, and lodged a case of accidental death.
