Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi Thursday said the police would take prompt action if any family member of a woman files a complaint against anyone for cheating on the pretext of love. He also warned that he would not hesitate to act as any woman’s brother in case a man is found faking his religious identity to pursue his love interest.

“In no corner of the world, especially on the land of Gujarat, it is not a crime to fall in love. But those who are out to defame love in the name of love, you remember this: If some Salim, by posing as Suresh, traps an innocent dikari ( here, a woman), I am here as the brother of that innocent dikari. If some Suresh proposes love while posing as a Salim, that is also wrong and if some Salim poses as a Suresh, that too is wrong. Everyone has the right to fall in love but if someone traps someone’s innocent daughter in the name of love, strict action will be taken against him,” Sanghavi said.

Sanghavi, who is also the Minister of State for Home and Transport, was addressing a public meeting after inaugurating a newly constructed bus station of the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) constructed at Rs 5.43 crore in Morbi.

“If any family member gives such a type of application to any police station or any police post, it will be taken seriously. Family members would not be asked to come another day. Inquiry would be conducted seriously on the very same day and the police would take serious action against those who have done the mischief of trapping my innocent dikariyo (women) and thereby, make their (women’s) lives a hell,” Sanghavi said, adding, “No one has the right to blemish the term of “love” and astha (feelings) associated with it.”

Notably, the state government had introduced the Gujarat Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Act, 2021, popularly known as anti-conversion law, that prohibits forceful or fraudulent religious conversion through marriage.

Sanghavi also appealed to leaders to take the responsibility to ensure that no one’s faith and feelings are hurt by such an activity so that the government doesn’t have to use the long hand of law. “The police are fully capable. If any incident of this nature will be treated with due seriousness. They will be investigated thoroughly and the roots of the crime will be exposed. I am here to assure you this,” he said, adding, “It is the responsibility of the society to prevent people from behaving this way, but if someone still continues to act in this manner as part of a conspiracy, the law is obliged to prevent it.”

Sanghavi also inaugurated a housing quarters constructed at the cost of Rs 5.67 crore for the staff of Wankaner town police station.
