Two women labourers were killed and another was seriously injured when an under-construction wall at a chemical factory in an industrial cluster in Daund in Pune district collapsed on Thursday.

The incident occurred while soil was being poured from the outer side of the wall using an earthmover. Police have booked the contractor and the site supervisor on charges of culpable homicide.

According to the Pune Rural police, the incident occurred around 4.30pm on the premises of a chemical manufacturing unit in the Kurkumbh industrial cluster of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

The Daund police identified the deceased as Mamatadevi Sudama Das (27) and Sonidevi Sarayu Kumar (28)—both natives of Bihar’s Gaya district and living in Mukadamwadi in Daund. The injured labourer has been identified as Deetadevi Babulal Kol (30) who hails from Rewa in Madhya Pradesh.

The Daund police arrested contractor Jaykumar Ramchandra Mundafane (46), a resident of Manjari Budruk, and site supervisor Akshay Bhanudas More (28), a resident of Mandavgan Pharata, on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and endangering the life and personal safety of others. Probe has revealed that no safety gear was provided to the workers on the site.

An officer from the Daund police station said, “A compound wall was being constructed for the premises of Melzer Chemicals Private Limited in Kurkumbh MIDC industrial cluster. A part of the wall had been freshly built and was yet to be set and dried fully. At this time, an earthmover was being used to pour soil to fill the dug-up space adjacent to the wall. Initial probe suggests that due to pressure created by the soil, a portion of the wall collapsed. The three women who were working there got crushed under the debris.”

The labourers were rushed to a nearby hospital, where Mamatadevi and Sonidevi were pronounced dead on arrival.
