State cabinet approves financial injection for Pune–Lonavala Railway Line Project

The financial responsibility will be shared equally between the union and state government equally. The state government will have to provide Rs 2,550 crore.

The Maharashtra State Cabinet on Wednesday approved the state government’s financial participation in the development of Rs 5,100 crore Pune–Lonavala suburban railway third and fourth line project.

The project, to be implemented by Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), is estimated to cost approximately Rs 5,100 crore in total, including land acquisition expenses. The financial responsibility will be shared equally between the union and state government equally. The state government will have to provide Rs 2,550 crore.

“Of the Rs 2,550 crore, the Pune Municipal Corporation have to provide 20 percent amounting to 510 crore, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to provide 20 percent amounting to Rs 510 crore, and PMRDA to provide 30 percent amounting to Rs 765 crore. The remaining amount will be provided by the state government,” said a PMC officer.

This decision is expected to significantly ease the growing passenger load on the Pune–Lonavala suburban rail services and enhance their overall capacity. This will improve the connectivity between neighbouring cities of Pune and Pimpri -Chinchwad along with faster commuting to the PMRDA area along the route till the hill town of Lonavala.
