Shortcut to death: train hits,kills three on tracks

Three persons taking a short cut through the railway tracks to reach the Akurdi railway station were killed on Monday night after a train hit them,police said.

Three persons taking a short cut through the railway tracks to reach the Akurdi railway station were killed on Monday night after a train hit them,police said.

Chinchwad police said Rohidas Kaluram Pasote (43),Sarlu Rohidas Pasote (35) and Rama Digambar Dakurkar (30),all from Ambedkarnagar slums in Akurdi,died in the accident. They were walking on the tracks towards Akurdi railway station to catch a train to Pune city,police said. 

While crossing a railway bridge,an express train heading for Pune hit them,flinging Rohidas and Sarlu into a 30-foot ditch below and dragging Dakurkar,who was stuck to the wheels,quite a distance. The three died on the spot. Dakurkar’s body was disfigured beyond recognition,the police said.

Rohidas and Sarlu died of head injuries. The bodies were found around 400 metre from the railway station.

People saw the bodies and alerted the railway police. They had a tough time removing the bodies of Rohidas and Sarlu from the ditch.

In the past few years several people have lost their lives crossing the railway tracks near Akurdi railway station. They walk on the tracks to reach the railway station courting danger as it takes them less time than it would take if they used the road.
