Pune: Teen hacked to death on Bajirao Road in broad daylight, 3 minors detained

Following the incident, senior police officers, teams from the local police station and those from the crime branch visited the location and launched a probe.

A 17-year-old boy was hacked to death and his 18-year-old friend was critically injured after they were attacked by three bike borne assailants with a kukri on the Bajirao Road in Pune on Tuesday afternoon. Police have detained three minors and said the attack was a fallout of a past rivalry between the youths.

The incident took place near Telephone Bhavan on the busy Bajirao road around 3pm on Tuesday. Officials from Khadak police station have identified the deceased as Mayank Kharare (17), a resident of Sane Guruji Nagar in Ambil Odha area, and his friend as Abhijit Ingale (18), a resident of Dandekar Bridge area. Officials said that Kharare and Ingale had taken a halt with their bike  when the suspects came and attacked them with a kukri.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Krushikesh Rawale said, “The assailants came on bikes and attacked the victim with a sharp machete and kukri. Initial probe suggests that the attack was a fallout of a past rivalry between some youths. We are investigating what the rivalry was about. The deceased had no criminal history as per our probe so far.”

Following the incident, senior police officers, teams from the local police station and those from the crime branch visited the location and launched a probe. Police have recovered the kukri used in the attack.

An officer from Khadak police station said, “Late in the evening, we detained three suspects. All three are minors. We are investigating the exact cause of the attack and sequence of events leading to the murder.”
