Pune city police have rescued eight camels allegedly being transported illegally and in poor conditions in a truck. Social activist Krushna Satpute has lodged the FIR in this case at Sinhagad road police station on May 14.
Police have arrested two persons including the truck driver Arun Chinpapa (28) and cleaner Lakhan Jadhav (30) in this case under sections of Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act 1960.
As per the FIR, honorary animal welfare officer Shivshankar Swamy received information that camels were being allegedly transported in a truck to Karnataka for slaughtering.
Swamy informed Satpute, who along with his friends stopped the truck near Wadgaon Bridge on Mumbai-Bangalore highway around 10 pm. They saw camels stuffed in the truck in pathetic conditions and informed the police control room. A police team reached the spot for investigation.
Police found eight camels in the truck with their mouths and legs allegedly tied up with rope. There was allegedly no arrangement for food and water for the camels, the FIR stated.
“After the FIR was lodged, the camels were safely taken to Pune Panjarpol trust in Bhosari. We suspect that camels were being taken to Karnataka for slaughtering illegally. The truck in which the camels were being transported has a Karnataka registration plate. We hope the police will investigate the case properly and arrest the people behind this,” said Swamy.
When contacted, senior police inspector Vijay Kumbhar said a probe into this case is underway.
