One of the chief attractions of Ganeshotsav is admiring the artistry displayed by Ganesh mandals. This year too designers are ensuring a visual delight for the lakhs of visitors who flock to Pune during the festive season.

One of the most anticipated pandals is the Shree Gajanan Mitra Mandal in Tulshibaug, which has a history of 59 years of traditional celebrations. This year, the mandal has recreated the revered Mahakal temple of Ujjain, offering devotees a chance to experience the spiritual aura of one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The 120-foot-long and 61-foot-high replica has been meticulously crafted by Mahesh Kore, a well-known set designer from the Marathi film industry.

“In addition to the replica, the mandal will conduct all significant rituals of the Mahakal temple, including the Bhasma Aarti, performed by special priests from Ujjain,” said Sagar Sunil Dahibhate, president of the mandal, adding, “We invite all devotees from Pune and across Maharashtra to come in large numbers and experience this darshan.”

The Shree Garud Ganpati Mandal, which was established in 1978, has a history of bringing powerful spiritual themes to life. The mandal has chosen to depict Kal Bhairav this year. “Kal Bhairav is a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva and known for his protective nature. The theme is intended to symbolise the destruction of evil and the safeguarding of devotees,” says Sunil Kunjir of Shree Garud Ganpati Mandal. The mandal’s commitment to spiritual themes is reflected in its detailed and evocative portrayal of Kal Bhairav, which is sure to leave a lasting impact on visitors.

With a legacy dating to 1893, the Akhil Mandai Mandal is one of Pune’s oldest and most respected Ganpati mandals.

A mystical Shivalaya theme will be on view this season. The pandal is designed to resemble a stone temple, with a Shivalinga at its centre on which water drips as an offering to Lord Shiva. “This theme not only pays homage to Lord Shiva but also creates a serene and spiritual atmosphere for visitors, reflecting the mandal’s long-standing tradition of devotion and artistic excellence,” says Sanjay Mate of Akhil Mandai Mandal.

The Bhau Sahab Ranghari Mandal, established in 1965, is known for its opulent and regal themes. This year, the mandal has created the Vignesh Mahal, a grand palace designed to honour Ganpati Bappa as an emperor. The pandal features a lavish throne and a royal ambiance, symbolising the reverence and devotion that the mandal has upheld for decades. The Vignesh Mahal theme highlights the majesty of Ganpati Bappa and the deep respect with which he is worshipped.
