Elderly farmer killed in lightning strike in Pune’s Khed taluka

Lightning strikes are mostly reported from April to June and also in September, say officials.

A 70-year-old farmer from a village in the Khed taluka of Pune died in a lightning strike Sunday evening when heavy rain and strong winds were reported across the district. According to Pune Rural police, the incident took place when the elderly farmer was out in his field.

Officials from the Khed police station under Pune Rural Police have identified the deceased as Ram Gangaram Kale, a resident of Chas village, located around 55 kilometre from Pune city.

Inspector Rajkumar Kendre, in charge of Khed police station, said, “The 70-year-old farmer was out in the field behind his house when lightning struck him leading to his death. He sustained severe burn injuries in the incident.”

In September last year, a 16-year-old girl was killed and her elder sister was injured in a lightning strike in the Sadalgaon village of the Shirur taluka under the Pune district.

Officials said that lightning strikes are mostly reported from April to June and also in September and the majority of the victims of these strikes are people from agrarian communities.
