The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) said Tuesday that the water supply in the city will be interrupted from Thursday (August 31) till late Friday (September 1).
PMC Water Supply Department in-charge Annirudha Pawaskar, in a statement, said that the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission company has decided to undertake urgent repair and maintenance at its substations on Thursday.
The supply from Parvati, Cantonment, Holkar, Warje, SNDT, Vadgaon and Bhama Askhed water works will be paused, affecting the respective areas.
“The power utility has undertaken repair work. So water purification plants will be closed. Thus, there would be no water supply for the entire day on August 31,” said Pawaska, adding that the supply would be restored on Friday at low pressure.
The city was having water cut once a week in summer due to the expected delay in monsoon and insufficient rainfall this year. However, the decision was withdrawn last month after water storage increased in the dams.
The water storage was around 90 per cent in the four dams upstream of the Mutha River due to good rainfall in July. However, the rainfall decreased thereafter, increasing concern of the administration.
The water supply in dams has to be provided for drinking water, irrigation and industries along with releasing water for dams downstream of the Mutha river but it has not been done taking into consideration the low amount of rainfall.
