The Pune police have booked the owner of a pet dog for negligence after the canine chased a 45-year-old electrician, who died after he lost balance and fell from the third floor of the building, at Kasba Peth in Pune city in October this year.
Police have identified the deceased as Ramesh Raghunath Gaikwad, a resident of Mangalwar Peth. Police said Gaikwad had gone for some electrical work at the Siddhivinayak society in Kasba Peth on the afternoon of October 1.
According to police, when Gaikwad reached the third floor of the building, a dog belonging to a resident on the fourth floor, started running after him. Afraid of the dog chasing him, Gaikwad was rushing down the staircase when he lost balance and fell into the duct of the building from the third floor. Gaikwad was taken to a hospital, but he eventually died.
After receiving information, a police team initiated investigation into the case. A postmortem was conducted on Gaikwad’s body. As per legal procedure, an accidental death report was lodged and a probe was launched to confirm the cause behind the incident.
Gaikwad’s wife lodged an FIR against the dog owner at the Faraskhana police station on Wednesday.
“Probe revealed that dog owner Siddharth Kamble did not take essential precautions. No board or information to make people aware about the dog’s presence was installed at the building where the incident took place,” said sub inspector Santosh Gore of the Faraskhana police station, the investigation officer of the case.
“Based on the findings of our inquiry, we have booked Kamble under Section 106 (1) (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A notice has been issued to the accused,” Gore said.
