Marathi not spoken even in Pune, insistence on Hindi: Sharad Pawar

At the 98th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, Pawar said that Marathi must be made compulsory if it is to be preserved.

While speaking at a program in regards to the upcoming 98th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in Delhi, NCP(SP) Sharad Pawar asked litterateurs to take cognisance of the problems the state is going through. Pawar who was speaking at a program organised in Pune on Saturday also expressed concern about how Marathi is not being spoken in Pune and its suburbs.

Speaking at the conference, Pawar said that Maharashtra was in crisis and asked writers to use their writing to get the state out of it. He added that after the capture of Delhi by Sadashivrao Peshwa, many Marathi people settled in Delhi and even today, pictures of Jijau and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj can be seen in the houses of their descendants.

Pawar remarked that even in Pune, Marathi was not spoken at present and that there was an insistence to speak in Hindi in suburbs of Pune.

He said that Marathi must be made compulsory if it is to be preserved. Expressing his belief that the status of Maharashtra will return to its former status soon, Pawar further said that it was necessary for writers to try to bring Maharashtra out of this crisis through their writing.
