A man allegedly killed his wife and then died by suicide at Ravangaon village in Daund Taluka of Pune district. The incident came to light in the early hours of Thursday, police said.
The deceased couple are identified as Ashok Maruti Gawade (50) and his wife Jayashri (45).
Police said Ashok was residing with his wife at Ranmala Vasti in Ravangaon and both were farmers. The couple have two sons, one working with a private company and other studying at a college in Pune city, police said
Police suspect that following a domestic dispute, Ashok allegedly strangled his wife to death and then died by suicide at their residence, sometime during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.
“Their son tried to call them over the phone, but there was no response. So he called the neighbours and relatives, who further checked their house and found the couple dead. After receiving information about the incident, our team visited the spot and initiated an investigation,” said senior police inspector Gopal Pawar of the Daund police station.
Pawar said there was no suicide note at the spot. “Prima facie, we suspect that the husband killed his wife and then ended his life. As of now, we have lodged an accidental death report in this case and a probe is on to confirm the cause behind the incident in the early hours of Thursday,” said Pawar.
A police officer said that based on the findings of the investigation, an offence of murder might be lodged against the husband. Meanwhile, the incident that came to light on Dussehra festival, sent shockwaves in Ravangaon village. The deceased were known well and were liked by the other villagers, the officer said.
