Pune city police arrested a domestic help for allegedly committing theft at a retired Indian Air Force Officer’s house in Sopan Baug in Ghorpadi area.
Police identified the accused as Sudha Rajesh Chougule (35), a resident of Borate Vasti, B T Kawade Road in Ghorpadi.
The retired wing commander and his wife had reached Wanavdi police station around 1 pm Thursday to report a theft at their house. They told the police gold and diamond ornaments worth Rs 5.87 lakh had been stolen from a cupboard in their house.
Based on a complaint filed by the retired IAF officer, a first information report (FIR) was lodged as per section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police launched a probe into the case.
Within 24 hours, police confirmed the theft had been committed by Sudha Chougule, who worked as a maid at the complainant’s house.
Police said that during investigation, they got information that Chougule had approached a jewellery shop to mortgage some ornaments.
Police nabbed Chougule for questioning, during which she admitted stealing the ornaments from the retired wing commander’s house on Wednesday.
“We have recovered all the stolen ornaments of Rs 5.87 lakh from the accused. She does not have any previous criminal record,” said senior police inspector Satyajit Admane of Wanavdi police station.
In a separate case, gold and diamond jewellery along with some cash, all worth over Rs 59 lakh, were robbed from the house of a retired Wing Commander’s house in Wanavdi, in July this year. The case still remains unsolved. Teams of the Wanavdi police station and the Crime Branch of the Pune city police aer investigating the case.
