Pune and its surrounding areas saw thunder and lightning with high wind velocity on Friday even as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) continued to keep the district on Yellow alert. Besides Pune, districts of Jalna, Beed, Kolhapur, Jalgoan, parts of Latur and other areas in Vidharbha and Marathwada saw rains with thundershowers.

Earlier this week, the IMD had issued Yellow alert asking citizens to be careful of thunder and lightning starting from April 7. The alert is continued for the weekend, with the IMD predicting more thunder and lighting with light to very light showers for Pune and its surrounding region. The present phenomenon is mainly caused due to incursion of moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal. The wind discontinuity has caused local instability resulting in the present situation

Day time temperatures for Pune city and other parts of the district remained high as usual. A marginal cooling was noted in the mercury but overall, the temperatures hovered between 36 and 38 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature of Pune city was recorded at 36 degrees Celsius. However, thanks to the cloud cover and winds in the evening, the temperatures dropped a bit. Rainfall in most parts of the city was negligible but managed to bring some relief from the high temperatures. Damdhere recorded the highest temperature in the district at 38.4 degrees Celsius.

Satellite pictures shared by the IMD showed a dense formation of cloud over the city and the district. Thus, in view of the possibility of thunder and lighting, the weather department has maintained the Yellow alert for the city and the district.
