With the maximum number of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases having been reported from an area that falls within her Baramati Lok Sabha constituency, NCP (SP) working president and MP Supriya Sule on Thursday described as a “red alert” the water pollution that has led to a spurt in cases on Sinhagad Road.
The maximum number of GBS patients are from the Sinhagad Road area, which is part of the Baramati parliamentary constituency represented by Sule in the Lok Sabha.
Sule on Thursday visited Nanded village from where water was supplied to the area. “The spurt in GBS cases is a serious issue and it is mostly in Nanded area. There is fear among residents. The spread of the disease is mainly due to water pollution, so PMC officials were directed to provide clean and safe water to residents. I will also urge the state government to ensure free treatment of GBS patients,” she said.
“Water pollution in Khadakwasla dam and in Ujani dam has led to health concern among citizens. I will take up the pollution issue with the Union environment minister,” she said.
Sule said the administration is bothered only about giving permission to highrise buildings but has failed completely in delivering basic civic facilities to residents. “I request Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar, the municipal commissioner and district collector to provide clean and safe water to citizens,” she added.
