Fergusson College turns 125

It was a glittering evening at Fergusson College,one of the oldest colleges in the city,on Saturday as scores of luminaries gathered to celebrate their alma mater’s 125th anniversary.

It was a glittering evening at Fergusson College,one of the oldest colleges in the city,on Saturday as scores of luminaries gathered to celebrate their alma mater’s 125th anniversary. From actors to politicians,educationists to lawyers,it was an occasion to reminisce the good old days.

A formal event will be organised at the college in the presence of President Pratibha Patil later this year.

The day began with a small function in the morning at the hostel room where swatantryaveer V D Savarkar used to stay during his college days. His associate S N Joshi handed over Savarkar’s gown,which he had worn while accepting D Lit from Nagpur and Pune universities in 1946 and 1959 respectively,to the college.

The gathering of alumni saw who’s who of the city sharing nostalgia. Ministers and celebrities were seen catching up with old friends.

The old heritage buildings,including the main building and Wadia library,were illuminated. The former students strolled on campus,chatting and clicking photohgraphs.

The current batch of arts students put up skits at Kimaya,the open theatre on campus. They also took out a procession in traditional costumes and performed cultural events. ‘
