The Pune unit of the state Anti-corruption bureau (ACB) has arrested a police officer attached to the economic offences wing (EOW) of the Pimpri Chinchwad police for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 2 crore from a lawyer and accepting the first installment of Rs 46.5 lakh.
As per a press release issued by the ACB Sunday, the accused officer was identified as police sub inspector Pramod Ravindra Chintamani (35), a resident of Gangotri Park, Dighi Road in Bhosari.
The ACB took the action after receiving a complaint from the 48-year-old lawyer.
According to the ACB, an offence was registered against the lawyer’s client at the Bavdhan police station this year. The client’s father was also arrested in this offence, stated the press release.
The accused police sub inspector Chintamani was the investigating officer for this case. Initially, Chintamani allegedly demanded Rs 2 lakh from the lawyer for helping his client and submitting a “say” in favour of the bail application filed by the client’s father in the said case.
But the lawyer filed a complaint against Chintamani at the ACB, Pune office, on October 27. The ACB team initiated a probe into this complaint. Probe revealed that Chintamani allegedly increased the bribe amount from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2 crore.
The ACB’s press release stated that Chintamani demanded Rs 1 crore bribe for himself and the remaining Rs 1 crore for the senior police inspector of his department. He also allegedly asked the lawyer to pay the first installment of Rs 50 lakh as early as possible.
Accordingly, the lawyer reached Untadya Maruti Temple in Rasta Peth area of Pune city on Sunday.
But the ACB team led by inspector Prasad Lonare laid a trap at the spot and nabbed Chintamani red handed while allegedly accepting an amount of Rs 46.5 lakh from the lawyer.
An FIR was lodged against Chintamani at the Samarth police station in Pune city, under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. When contacted, Shirish Sardeshpande, Superintendent of ACB, Pune unit, confirmed that a probe regarding the involvement of the senior police inspector in this case was on.
Police inspector Avinash Gharbude of the ACB is probing the case further, the press release stated.
