In view of the upcoming state Assembly elections, the Pune city police have so far collected 1,095 licensed firearms from citizens who possess a gun licence.
The police have also intensified action against those in possession of illegal firearms. In the last couple of days, Pune Police have seized 11 illegal weapons, including one pistol and 10 sharp weapons from criminals.
Besides these, police have also been keeping a close watch on the criminals on record, who may cause trouble during the election campaign.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, six offences for violation of election code of conduct were registered in different parts of the city. An offence for violation of election code of conduct was registered against BJP MLA and candidate Bhimrao Tapkir at the Sahkar Nagar police station.
Similar offences were registered against other party candidates at Nigdi, Bhosari, Hadapsar and Chatuhshrungi police station.
A senior officer from the special branch of Pune city police said that a meeting would be conducted soon to decide the spots where election rallies would be allowed in the city. As of now, the river bed in Deccan area is available for election rallies. No election rallies will be allowed at public places, to avoid crowding and traffic jams on roads.
