The renowned Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune has been granted an Institution Deemed to be University status by Government of India’s Ministry of Education. According to an April 22 notification by the ministry, FTII and the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata were granted this status under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956.
The status has been granted under advice by the University Grants Commission (UGC). After an online application by FTII for grant of a Deemed University status, the UGC had recommended that the ministry share a Letter of Intent with the institute in August 2024 for fulfilment of certain conditions. The compliance report of these conditions was submitted by the Director on January 27 this year and was accepted by the UGC expert committee, after which the status has been granted.
This major move will allow the FTII to launch doctoral, research, and innovative academic programmes. The institute will also join the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and integrate with the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC). The ministry has also said that the institute will adhere to UGC norms and National Education Policy 2020 guidelines.
Actor R Madhavan, President of FTII Society and Chairman of the Governing Council, shared a statement with The Indian Express saying, “I’m extremely happy…in fact, ecstatic, and I also feel a great sense of relief and gratitude. The entire staff and team have worked tirelessly over months to beat challenging timelines to get this done. I’m extremely proud of them and grateful to them for having pulled this one through. This is a great opportunity for the students and I’m very sure they’ll make the best use of this new status. A big thank you to the Ministry of Education, Government of India.”
