Surveillance camera footage from the spot where gangster Sharad Mohol was shot dead in Pune’s Kothrud on Friday afternoon shows that the assailants who were walking with him pulled out pistols, shot him in the back, and then on his head and shoulders when he turned. The 39-year-old gangster, seen wearing a bright green kurta, slumped down in the narrow lanes as the accused fled the spot after firing at least four rounds at him.
A resident of Sutardara in Kothrud and a native of Mutha village in Mulshi taluka of Pune district, Mohol was rushed to Sahyadri Hospital in Kothrud but was pronounced dead there, the police said.
Eight people were arrested from Pune-Satara Road near Shirwal on Friday night, including key suspect Sahil alias Munna Polekar, also a resident of Sutardara.
Pune Police Commissioner Retesh Kumaarr said, prima facie, the attack was a fallout of an internal rivalry within Mohol’s gang over a financial dispute.
Mohol’s aide Arun Dhumal, 32, lodged a first information report (FIR) in the case at the Kothrud police station. The police said it was Mohol’s wedding anniversary on Friday. He had left his office in Sutardara along with his wife and was about to take his four-wheeler to visit Dagdusheth Halwai Ganesh Temple when the incident occurred.
