Rakesh Khedekar, the 36-year-old man who has been arrested near Pune for allegedly killing his 32-year-old wife Gauri Anil Sambrekar and stuffing her body in a suitcase, was admitted to Sassoon General Hospital on Friday morning after he “consumed phenyl and pesticide”.

Dr Eknath Pawar, Dean, B J Government Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital, told The Indian Express that Satara police brought Khedekar to the hospital on Friday morning.

“According to the information provided by the patient, he consumed phenyl and pesticide used to kill cockroaches on Thursday night. Since he had consumed some kind of corrosive chemical, an endoscopy was performed to rule out perforation in the oesophagus. He has swelling in the neck but is otherwise stable,” Dr Pawar said.

“Examination shows it is a case of poisoning,” Dr Yallappa Jadhav, the medical superintendent, said, adding that treatment was underway. Police are also present at the hospital.

According to reports, Khedekar hails from Mumbai and worked in Bengaluru as a software professional. His wife is also from Maharastra, and the two got married around two years ago. After allegedly committing the murder, he called his landlord and informed him that her body was in the suitcase.

Police had earlier said that after allegedly committing the murder, the accused was going from Bengaluru to Mumbai by car. They said he allegedly consumed poison and was found unconscious in Shirwal in the state’s Satara district.

“He was found unconscious on the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway around 8.30 pm on Thursday and was taken to a hospital. After getting to know that he had committed a murder, information about him was passed on to the Bengaluru police. The Karnataka Police will be taking him into custody,” said inspector Yashwant Nalawade of Shirwal police station.
