An 11-year-old boy died after getting trapped and crushed between the elevator and the wall of a residential building at Charholi Phata in Pimpri Chinchwad as Dussehra celebrations were underway on Thursday evening.

The police identified the deceased as Amey Sahebrao Fartade, a resident of A-Wing, Ram Smruti Society in Shriram Colony. The incident took place around 4.45 pm, they added.

Bapu Bangar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Pimpri Chinchwad, said an accidental death report was lodged at the Dighi police station in the wake of the incident and a probe was launched to confirm the cause behind the boy’s death.

Pramod Wagh, Senior Police Inspector, Dighi police station, said that though the boy resided in the A-wing of Ram Smruti Society, the incident took place between the third and fourth floors of the elevator in the B-wing.

After coming to know that Amey was trapped inside the elevator, local residents initially tried to rescue him themselves but failed to do so, following which they alerted the Pimpri Chinchwad Fire Brigade and the police, seeking help.

Rushikant Chipade, a senior officer with the Pimpri Chinchwad Fire Brigade, said a person arrived at the fire station in Chovisawadi around 5.05 pm on a motorcycle, saying that a boy was stuck in the lift of a building.

“Our team rushed to the spot. The deceased was trapped and crushed between the elevator and the slab of the building. Firemen removed him by bringing the lift down. He was then immediately taken to a hospital, but was pronounced dead by the doctors,” Chipade added.
