Three people, including a four-year-old girl, were killed and three others were injured when the official vehicle of the district magistrate of Bihar’s Madhepura ran into them in Madhubani on Tuesday.
DM Vijay Prakash Meena was not in the vehicle when the accident took place at Phulparas on National Highway 57 (Muzaffarpur-Purnia). The vehicle was returning from Patna after being repaired.
The SUV (BR43E 0005), registered in the name of a Madhepura district official since 23 January 2019, first hit some road construction workers and later a woman and her daughter walking on the road on Tuesday morning.
A labourer from Jaipur Ashok Singh, 60, and Phulparas residents, Gudiya Devi, 31, and her daughter Aarti Kumari, 4, were killed in the accident
Madhubani Superintendent of Police Sushil Kumar said, “A case has been lodged against the vehicle owner. When we reached the spot, there was no one inside the vehicle”.
While some residents alleged that Madhepura DM was inside the vehicle when the accident took place, Kumar did not confirm it.
Madhupura district Public Relations Officer Kundan Kumar Singh said, “The DM was in not the vehicle, which had been returning to Madhepura after its repair work in Patna”.
According to the Madhepura district transport office, the vehicle’s insurance had expired in December 2019 and its pollution certificate was valid until December 2021.
