Dalit leader killed, supporters go on rampage in Bihar

SEVERAL SHOPS were vandalised and more than a dozen vehicles damaged in Lalganj town of Bihar’s Vaishali district on Friday as a group of people protesting against the murder of a local leader of Dalit Sena – a wing of the Lok Janshakti Party – went on a rampage, demanding the arrest of the assailants.

Rakesh Paswan (40) was shot dead by unidentified persons on Thursday evening in Panchagania area under Lalganj police station.

Sub-divisional Police Officer Om Prakash, who is heading the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case, told reporters: “Prima facie, it appears to be a case of personal enmity. But we are looking into all possible angles.” No arrest has been made so far.

Vaishali Superintendent of Police Ravi Ranjan Kumar, who reached the spot, said: “Supporters of Rakesh Paswan tried to create law and order problem by attempting arson but we controlled the situation.”

“The SIT has been investigating the matter and we will soon get to know about the exact motive behind the killing,” he said.

Union minister Pashupati Kumar Paras and Jamui MP Chirag Paswan, who head Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), respectively, visited Lalganj to meet the family of Rakesh Paswan. While Chirag raised the issue of deteriorating law and order situation in the state, Paras demanded a fair probe into the matter.
