Vehicles, thatched houses and shops were torched and several people injured in communal flare-ups reported over Ram Navami processions in the Bihar towns of Sasaram and Biharsharif on Friday.

Sasaram and Biharsharif are district headquarters of Rohtas and Nalanda respectively. About one and a half dozen people reportedly suffered injuries in the incidents. In Nalanda, about a dozen people were injured. Though police are yet to provide any details, there are unconfirmed reports of a firing in Biharsharif.

The Rohtas administration has imposed prohibitory orders in some parts of Sasaram and beefed up security in view of a public gathering scheduled to be addressed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday. The BJP leader has been on a state tour and has already held public meetings in Purnia and West Champaran.

Rohtas district magistrate Dharmendra Kumar Singh and superintendent of police Vinit Kumar are camping at the spot after two groups clashed on Friday afternoon and stone-pelting followed near Navratna Bazar of the town. There is no report of any casualty so far.

The Nalanda police said though the Ram Navmi procession passed peacefully through Biharsharif on Thursday, two groups clashed on Friday when a shobha yatra was being carried out from Hospital Road to Baba Maniram Ka Akhada under the Laheri police station area, where there is a sizeable Muslim population.
