At least seven people have died so far after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Bihar’s East Champaran district between Friday night and Saturday afternoon, the police said.
Champaran Deputy Inspector General of Police Jayant Kant, while confirming the seven deaths, said that the post-mortem of three more persons had been done. “Medical experts have been verifying the reasons of death after the aggrieved families complained that the deceased had fallen ill after drinking spurious liquor,” the DIG informed, while adding that forensic teams have visited the spot.
The deaths were first reported in Lakshmipur village of Turkoulia police station, followed by Harsiddhi, Paharpur and Sugauli areas. The police informed that prima facie investigation suggested that the deaths were caused by consumption of the same lot of spurious liquor that was sold in these areas on Friday.
This comes after 72 people had died in December last year after consuming spurious liquor in Saran district. The National Human Rights Commission had issued notices to Bihar government and other concerned authorities in connection with the Saran hooch tragedy and its reports had blamed the administration for the deaths.
