A trial run of a prototype Vande Bharat sleeper train between Ahmedabad and Mumbai Central Terminus was conducted on Wednesday afternoon, Western Railway officials said.
During the trial, the train ran at a maximum speed of 130 km/h.
According to officials, the train reached Mumbai Central Ahmedabad at around 1.50 pm and departed for Ahmedabad at 2:45 pm.
Railway officials said that the train was scheduled to reach Mumbai Central at 12.40 pm, but it reached around 1.10 hours late due to some “unavoidable” reasons.
Officials said that the successful completion of the final trial run would help in obtaining the certification from the Railway Safety Commissioner (CRS).
The Western Railway already runs two Vande Bharat trains services from Mumbai — to Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad.
On the Central Railway of Mumbai division, there are two trains from Mumbai — one to Shirdi and another to Solapur. However, these trains are made for travelling with seating facilities. While the new Vande Bharat is a sleeper class useful for long distance travel purposes.
The new sleeper Vande Bharat, once operational, could potentially operate on the Delhi-Mumbai route.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper train has 16 coaches, including 11 AC 3-tier coaches, four AC 2-tier coaches, and one First AC coach. Additionally, special provision has been made not only for regular passengers but also for visually impaired passengers.
