Though the BJP-led state government had branded the annual Elephanta Festival as part of its ambitious Make in India Week, there was not much impact of the global event on the number of people who attended the cultural programme. As per the tourism department, the turnout of the event, held at the Gateway of India, was the same or even lower than usual.
“Roughly about 3,000 people must attended the Festival. We had given out invitations for the festival as part of the Make in India event,” an official from the Maharashtra Tourism Department Corporation (MTDC) said.
A tourism department official said the turnout wasn’t much different from the past few years despite branding the event as part of the Make in India Week, and none of the foreign delegates who came for the mega event attended the culture programme.
The state had organised the Elephanta Festival on a much larger scale this year. Held on February 16 and 17, it featured singer Kailash Kher, Roop Kumar Rathod and Sonali Kumar Rathod, popular musical Marathi Bana and so on. Certain artistes were also disappointed with the state for cancelling their performance or curtailing it in the interest of time.
“There were issues over the time allotted for the performances with a few artistes, but we mutually worked it out,” a senior MTDC official said.
