In a bid to strengthen security at Deonar abattoir, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to install 300 CCTV cameras within its 64-acre premises. Installation of two video walls, five LED screens and 12 Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) cameras will also be carried out at the abattoir, which is Asia’s largest abattoir. The plan has been proposed by the BMC administration to maximise the safety of lakhs of vendors, buyers as well as animals who are expected to gather within the abattoir premises from across the country in the month of June, for Bakri Eid.

In the tendering process, which commenced recently, a proposal for the provision of 12 PTZ cameras has also been floated. With the PTZ camera’s capacity of being rotated at various angles and zooming in technology, BMC officials are expecting to have a tighter grasp over security at Deonar Abattoir. The 300 cameras will be monitored from control rooms by the Mumbai Police, along with civic officials.

An official from the Deonar abattoir told The Indian Express, “About 15 days before Bakri Eid, 4000 – 5000 traders from various parts of Maharashtra and states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat come to Deonar for trade. Between 12,000 to 15,000 buffaloes and over two lakh goats are sold during this period.”

This high volume of trade attracts a large number of buyers to Deonar prior to Bakri Eid. “These cameras will be installed to ensure security and minimise theft of animals,” said the official.

Scheduled on June 28, preparations for Bakri Eid are in full swing at the 64-acre slaughterhouse. The BMC has also earmarked a 77,000 square-metre area for the construction of a temporary shelter centre and pavilion for goats and buffaloes.
