The Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS), a deemed-to-be university headquartered in Mumbai, is preparing to develop a national network of like-minded social science institutions from across India to work on locally relevant developmental challenges with focus on regional complexities.
With four existing campuses in TISS – Mumbai, Tuljapur, Hyderabad and Guwahati along with plans to revive the now dissolved TISS research centre in Patna – the plan involves creation of research and academic hubs in West, South, North East and North of India. In this arrangement the TISS campus or research centre will function as facilitators to create a consortium of interdisciplinary researchers coming from different local academic and research institutions to work on common goals of regional development.
According to the concept note, TISS Guwahati Campus will evolve as a scholarly hub, bringing together a network of academic institutions across all eight states to enhance research and scholarship in North-East India. This will be done with an understanding of unique challenges and opportunities based on local cultural, ethnic, and ecological diversity with hopes of making substantial influence on policymaking for North-Eastern states.
Prof. Tiwari said, “Just as the TISS Guwahati will serve as a lighthouse for the North East, TISS Hyderabad will develop a parallel consortium for the South of India and so on. The emphasis will be on not replicating the existing TISS academic and research structures but each of these centres to have their own indigenous identity. The idea is to ensure combined and result-oriented brainstorming on locally relevant social issues in order to recommend required policy decisions to the government.”
