The Sewri police arrested three men for allegedly selling a duplicate iPhone 5 handset to a man who contacted them after seeing an advertisement posted on an online shopping portal.
According to the police, the advertisement offered an iPhone 5 handset for Rs 22,500 on the online shopping portal Olx.in. The police said that the advertisement listed the name and phone number of a man named Sameer. “The complainant contacted Sameer and was told to meet at a traffic police chowk in Sewri West the next day. On July 11, the complainant handed over Rs 22,500 to two of the accused”, said Anil Sardal, senior inspector, Sewri police.
The following day, the complainant was informed by a colleague that his new handset was fake. He immediately registered a complaint of cheating at Sewri police station. Using the number posted on the website, the police tracked down the address in China Mill Compound in Sewri and arrested two persons — Kisan Jaiswal (19) and Deepak Saroj (20), Sardal said. “Both are students at the Central Railway Junior College in Parel. They hit upon the plan while surfing through the website a few months ago”, he said.
Sardal said the duo was aided by Azim Shaikh, who runs a shop selling mobile phones in Sewri. The three men have been remanded to police custody until July 17.
