In yet another instance signalling a tussle within the ruling Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his deputy Eknath Shinde on Sunday made contradictory statements over deportation of Pakistani nationals in the state in the wake of Pahalgam terror attack.
While Shinde claimed that 107 Pakistani nationals in the state were missing, Fadnavis said that all of them have been identified and they will be deported.
Speaking at a rally in Vidarbha’s Buldhana district, the Shiv Sena chief said: “Amit bhai (Union Home minister Amit Shar) and Modi ji (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) have warned that Pakistani nationals should leave the country at the earliest.. In Maharashtra, some 107 Pakistani nationals are missing. They should leave the country right now. If not, the police will find you and encounter you (thoktil). That’s the kind of anger people have right now.”
However, Fadnavis who was in Pune, denied reports of 107 Pakistani nationals being “missing” in the state without naming Shinde.
“Do not make some random news over this… Not a single Pakistani national is missing. All Pakistani nationals have been identified and they will be deported. Not a single Pakistani national will remain here. The process will be over by today evening or tomorrow morning,” Fadnavis told mediapersons.
The two Mahayuti allies were last week seen racing to claim credit for bringing back stranded tourists from Jammu and Kashmir to Mumbai after the terror attack.
While the CMO had issued a statement announcing that around 500 stranded tourists have been brought back to the state, Shinde’s office released another statement claiming that the Shiv Sena has brought back 520 tourists to Mumbai on special flights.
Shinde himself had gone to Srinagar, even as Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan of the BJP was overlooking the operations. Despite Shinde being the Deputy CM, Maharashtra BJP chief and Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule claimed that Shinde had gone to Srinagar as a party leader.
Meanwhile, two other ministers from the BJP and Shiv Sena, openly targeted each other without taking names.
BJP minister Nitesh Rane targeted Minister of State Home (Urban) Yogesh Kadam of Shiv Sena for allegedly not registering an FIR against an accused in an incident of stone pelting. Kadam shot back saying he needs no learning from “outsiders” and from those who cannot control their own assembly constituencies.
“The department is with our Devendra Fadnavis. If there is no name in the FIR, if there is someone who is protecting someone then that person is not bigger than Devendra Fadnavis. The person concerned in that department should take a note of it,” Rane said, without naming Kadam, at a public rally on Saturday in Dapoli which is an assembly seat of Kadam. Rane then went on to give a call of economic boycott of Muslims by Hindu community.
“I don’t need to learn from outsiders about keeping peace in my constituency. Those who cannot control their own areas should see the mirror before coming to other’s… I am the one who never left saffron flag since my birth. It is comical if someone is going to teach Hindutva to a Shivsainik like me,” said Kadam, referring to Rane’s stint in Congress as an MLA.
