Starting this academic year, around 50 civic schools in the city will have sex education as part of their curriculum in the form of a new module called Life Skills Education. The move has been largely initiated by the Mumbai District AIDS Control Society (MDACS). MDACS officials believe that the introduction of this module will help create awareness among adolescents about HIV,AIDS and other sexually contracted diseases.
The youth had always been a very important target group for us. Children in their mid-teens are very impressionable and need to be educated about sex before they step into college. We have been working hard with school authorities for the past several months to convince them about the importance of such a module as part of their academic curriculum, Dr Harish Pathak, additional director of MDACS said.
In 2007,the state government following footsteps of BJP governments in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat had banned sex education books prescribed by CBSE. They had also cancelled an adolescence behaviour programme which was to be introduced in sixth grade claiming that the manner in which the programme was taught was improper.
MDACS officials, however, have said that the purpose of revamping the former sex education programme is to look at sex in the social context.
The focus of this module is not going to be centered on sex alone. In fact,it is the last part of the session so that students are not suddenly bombarded with the concept, Vinitha Venkatraman, joint director of communications of MDACS said.
The module, which will be split into sections of physical health, abuse and its consequences (physical abuse, substance abuse),peer pressure,HIV and sex, will be taught to students of the ninth and tenth grade. There will be 16 sessions of the module in one academic year, with each session lasting for around 40 minutes.
The sessions will be held by BMC medical officers for which 32 officers have already undergone training. St. Gregorius High School ( Chembur),St. Anthony High School ( Chembur) and St Annes High School (Juhu) are among the schools, which will be introducing the module.
We have to weigh the consequences of such a programme. If results are beneficial for the children,we could apply it for more schools too, BMC education officer,Mirza Baig said.
