Rest of Metro heads for E-ways

Future Metro alignments will be along the Eastern and Western Express Highways so that traffic in the city is not congested, the MMRDA has decided.

Future Metro alignments will be along the Eastern and Western Express Highways so that traffic in the city is not congested, the MMRDA has decided, ruling out any Metro work on the already congested S V Road and L B S Marg in the suburbs.

“We have told our consultants (RITES) to plan the alignments of future Metro projects along the Eastern and Western Express highways,” said Metropolitan Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad. A proposed Hutatma Chowk-Mulund corridor, and an extension of the Mulund link to Thane Metro station at Teen Haath Naka, are both now expected to run along the Eastern Express Highway.

The proposed Metro route in Thane will run along the Eastern Express Highway before turning left to the Kapurbavdi junction near Ghodbunder Road in Thane.

The move is aimed at pre-empting not only congestion but also reducing clashes between agencies. In Mumbai, the MMRDA headed by the Chief Minister (a Congress leader) has been at loggerheads with the BMC. In Thane, too, most of the municipal corporations and councils are ruled by the Shiv Sena.
