Proposals to start new colleges, submitted for the current academic year, may not see the light of the day. October 29 was the last date for submitting applications to universities across the state for opening new colleges for the next academic year (2012-13). Ironically, the new college proposals for 2011-12 academic year are yet to be approved by the state. While there has been a huge delay this year, sources in the higher and technical education department said the 2011-12 proposals are likely to be cancelled.
The CM had instructed the higher education department to give permission to only those proposals which meet the norms. Subsequently, the department had submitted the final list to him. If the decides not to approve the list, the proposals for the current academic year will stand cancelled. We will have to wait and watch, said a source.
This year, the higher and technical education department received 295 proposals from universities across Maharashtra to start degree colleges across various streams. After scrutiny,a final list of over 60 colleges was submitted to the CM for his nod, said sources. As per norms, permissions are valid for two years.
However, classes have started in colleges a long time ago. So,even if the proposals are not approved,it wont have any impact on the students as theres no demand for more seats, said the source.
Meanwhile, the Unauthorised Institutions Bill, which is an attempt to keep a check on illegal and unapproved institutes, could be presented in the next session of the Cabinet. The consent of all departments related to education was taken. We sought their cooperation and they have assured support for the Bill, said Rajesh Tope,Higher and Technical Education Minister.
