Issued rates for ICU -- Rs 4,000, Rs 7,500 and Rs 9,000 for oxygen beds, ICU without ventilators, and ICU with ventilators, respectively -- were not enough for treatment of critical Covid patients, the IMA said.

On Monday night Health Minister Rajesh Tope paid surprise visits to four private hospitals -- Bombay hospital, Jaslok, Hinduja and Lilavati -- to check whether the hospitals had reserved 80 per cent beds and whether they were charging patients on subsidised rates.

The first-time violators will have to pay Rs 1,000 fine and perform public service for one day. The second-time offenders will have to pay Rs 3,000 fine and perform public service for three days, the minister added.

Across Mumbai, the government hopes to acquire around 6,000 beds in private hospitals this way. Patients would be admitted for these beds through a centralised portal system.
